New Resources sponsors Gateway for Cancer Research event
CHICAGO - November 12, 2009 - Gateway for Cancer Research, an international non-for-profit organization that funds patient-centered clinical trials for cancer treatment, raised $1.7 million during its annual Passport to a Cure gala at Chicago’s Swissotel.
The celebration of pioneering cancer research included live and silent auction activities, along with the annual Fund-A-Grant initiative which raised $327,000 and included a generous $100,000 match by a local family. Gateway’s 2008 Fund-A-Grant recipient Dr. Sally Arai, Stanford University Medical Center, and her patient Sonia Attala kicked off the Fund-A-Grant portion of the evening, showing supporters the impact Gateway-funded research has on the development of successful treatment options.
Dr. Arai has been investigating the success of autologous cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells as a treatment for patients with blood cancer after bone marrow transplantation, novel research which helped successfully treat Sonia Atalla’s Hodgkins Lymphoma.
“Gateway is diligent about funding only the most pioneering research, ensuring that every donor dollar is a wise investment,” said Lynette Bisconti, president of Gateway. “Having Dr. Aria and Sonia standing here today proves that what we do tonight has an enormous impact on cancer patients not just 10 years from now, but today.”
Nearly 800 guests were on hand to honor these important treatment advances. Among the guests were Former Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael O. Leavitt; Cancer Treatment Centers of America CEO Stephen Bonner; Joseph Gregoire, Regional President of Illinois National City Bank; Cathy Greenberg, PhD, Co-author of “What Happy Working Mothers Know”; and many other local business leaders. CBS 2 Co-anchor Rob Johnson was the night’s emcee. Auction items included court time with tennis legend Jim Courier; a private tour and lunch with former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich; and a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland.
