Background

The client is a manufacturer of medical devices. An essential component of the clients revenue derives from service contracts for medical imaging machines, and a growth area is in servicing competitor’s machines. Very little time was available to hit market window for a pilot program.

Challenge

Provide the ability for technical service group to service machines manufactured by competitors and deployed in clinics world-wide. Technical support engineers need the ability to communicate with these machines via a VPN to obtain data to allow problem diagnosis/resolution.

Solution

Place a server between the target machines and service VPN that manages manufacturer variation and provide Web based interfaces for working with diagnostic data.

Result

Completed fixed-bid project ahead of time in 3 months and within budget. Results included :

pilot program communicating with machines from two major competitors was ready in time for market opportunity
created architecture for communications with intermediate server
implemented protocol and network communication configuration software for target machines
provided Web-based diagnostic tools available to engineers from any location on the Internet
improved fundamental networking software used for all communication with equipment in the field
